Stickers vs labels…Is there really a difference?
Stickers and labels are sometimes used interchangeably but are they actually the same? In this article we'll tackle this not-so-hotly contested issue to see if we can shed some light on the subject.
It's hard to find any meaningful differences between the two, in fact, there are far more similarities than differences.
For instance:
- Labels and stickers both use an adhesive that can be permanent or removable
- Similar equipment can be used to produce both items
- Labels and stickers both have a paper backing known as the liner which "protects" the sticky side until ready to be applied
Be that as it may, most people seem to differentiate between a sticker and a label based on the application or purpose of the item. Generally speaking, stickers are typically used as promotional material for brands, causes, or teams. They are usually individually cut rather than coming on a sheet or roll.
In contrast, when most people use the term "label" they are referring to something that is used to identify a product or item. Labels communicate information so they can be used for a variety of purposes: shipping, packaging, warehousing, etc. Labels usually come finished on a roll or sheet.
So, don't let it stress you out. Ask anyone and you're likely to get different answers but at the end of the day, the difference tends to stem from the purpose or end use of the label/sticker rather than any material difference.
