Well friends, we’ve had a lot of fun on this mythbustin’ journey. Let’s take a look at another prominent myth touted by the big guys:
Myth #4: Remanufactured cartridges do not equal the page yield of HP cartridges because most do not adhere to ISO standards for measuring page yield.
Before we dive into why legitimate remanufactured cartridges do equal the page yield of an OEM cartridge, we should talk about page yield in general. In HP’s own words:
“Page yield data should be used as a starting point for comparison purposes, and not to predict the exact yield you will get from your HP printer and cartridge. Likewise, the declared yield is not intended to be the minimum number of pages that the cartridge will print. Rather, page yield data is meant to estimate the average yield expected from a particular cartridge when measured using the ISO test methodology in connection with a designated printer system. Individual cartridges can perform above and below this average due to variation in the cartridge manufacturing process. Additionally, actual yield varies considerably based on factors such as the content of printed pages, typical printer job size, the environmental conditions during operation and the amount of color printing relative to monochrome printing.”
In short, the more you use, the faster it runs out. It is like gas mileage in your vehicle (more car analogies). How fast you drive, weather, and traffic all affect your vehicle’s MPG. In the same way, coverage rate, climate and media type all affect your cartridge’s page yield. So how do we test page yield for remanufactured toner cartridges? The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) is an international standards organization that develops and publishes testing standards for a vast number of products and materials. Print.Save.Repeat. uses ASTM test methodology to determine how much toner to put in each cartridge to achieve the intended page yield. Both ASTM and ISO test methodologies use a 5% coverage rate on plain paper in a temperate environment as a base, which is exactly the same as OEM. The claim that remanufactured cartridges do not equal the page yield of OEM cartridge is simply not true. Just be sure to find a reputable after-market manufacturer that uses ASTM standards to determine page yield.
